Our film Dear Diary; will deal with topics such as depression, anxiety, and even suicide so we want to make sure that any music included is appropriate and doesn’t take away from the drama of the story. For the opening, we will mostly need synchronous sounds, diegetic sounds and one non-diegetic sound.
For the synchronous sounds, these will be sound of the bell ringing at dismissal, the door opening and closing of the house, the noise of all the people talking at school, the bell ringing, the fridge door, Maddie writing in her diary, etc. These sounds can be either found online or created using the foley technique. For example, to create the sound of a pen writing on paper we could record someone scratching a toothpick on a piece of paper.

The dialogue will be between the 2 girls in the car and the other dialogue will be between Maddie and her mom towards the end of the opening. For that, we don’t really need to do much other than act and make sure the dialogue is clear and can be listened to.
Our only non-diegetic sound will take place in the opening credits while Maddie is in the car. We wanted to include something that resembles a Billie Eilish song to go without Idea. Currently, Billie Eilish is loved by many teenagers, and her songs tend to discuss love, loss, depression, self-image, and even suicide, all of which, sadly, today’s teens can relate to in some shape or form. One of her songs that would be perfect for this movie is her hit “What Was I Made For?” This somber ballad discussed themes of identity and purpose, reflecting on the feelings of being lost.
